Yay, David! And thank you!
I was a lone writer for the past 20 years in one company (saving grace -
they took on different products every 2-3 years) and promoted to a manager
level after 4 years of TW because of my ability to produce on time. I had to
learn to become a member of a larger team - one member from six depts in our
company - and learn to lead that team. My manager expected that I could
manage the project, including reporting structure. I wanted to report our
progress to my manager so that he would continue his confidence level.
When I took a promotion to another type of job in another department, I
sacrificed the management role for a personal challenge (right brain-left
brain). Unfortunately, the manager I reported to could barely manage
herself, let alone her new employee (as she felt she needed to do). I left
that company :(.
Looking back on a few things, it's easy to fall into the decision to
micro-manage and more difficult to trust your people. Not everyone is
leadership material. When we are placed in a situation where we think our
jobs depend on that project being completed on time or have expectations of
team personality, or just don't like the people-part of leadership, we are
the only people that really suffer.
