As at least one other person has pointed out, underlining was
originally an editorial markup to indicate emphasis or italics. With
the rise of computers, this usage became unnecessary. Yet word
processors continue to include underlining as a formatting option.
Personally, I dislike using underlining even as a link. Whenever
possible, I prefer using a different color or another formatting
option. About the only thing that underlining does well is obscure
the text above it.
