TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'm currently in the process of collecting information before deciding
whether to move from RoboHelp to another authoring tool, and wondered if
anyone was aware of a recent "hands-on"* comparitive review of the various
options. (I've followed the conversations here on techwr-l for several
years, but I'd be interested to see additional published resources. They'll
help me make my case a little more easily with my manager.) The only thing
I've been able to turn up with a bit of digging is an article entitled
"HTMLHelp roundup" (in last Feb.'s "Developers Review"), and it's on order
via our library, but until it arrives...
* As opposed to the traditional and evil "here's a list of the features, but
I'm not going to tell you how well they work" article.
I do have demo copies of each tool installed, and plan to spend some time
playing with them to get a more personal feel for the problems and
advantages of each, but my testing time is limited, and any resources that
can reduce my time requirements would be appreciated.
Thanks!
