TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
To broaden the discussion a bit, we use FrameMaker for our docs, yet Cisco's
IT people will tell you, if you ask, that Frame is "a non-supported
application." Rubbish! All they mean is that THEY (IT, that is) don't
support Frame. In a way, I'm grateful that they don't! <G>
<mini-rant>Of course, if something else breaks, they might claim that Frame
did it. At another company, one "helpful" IT tech support guy removed Frame
from my system when he was upgrading something else because it was
"unsupported." In response, I used words he didn't know I knew.
Don't get me wrong, I really do appreciate GOOD tech support, especially
when the support person actually ASKS what's wrong and what I want to do
before diving in. But the other ones are like doctors who amputate the wrong
limb.</mini-rant>
