TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
You don't need grammar, just like you don't need the highway code <g> (do you have the highway code across the pond?!). Seriously though, I have read writing that was totally devoid of any grammar (well, at least it was well hidden!) and I managed to make sense of it. But grammar, like roadsigns, are designed to get us from A to B as quickly and as safely as possible. I've been driving for a long time now and easily recognise all the main signs - STOP etc. Having said that there are quite a few signs that I wouldn't readily recognise at all - maybe familiar but as to exactly what they mean.... I see grammar in the same way - I know the major stuff to do with comma usage etc (the thing people often get wrong) and for the more obscure rules, I look them up.
I can read a piece of text and tell you whether or not it reads OK or not and rewrite it so that it reads better, even if I can't always tell you what's wrong with it!
