Hardly "best of breed" by today's standards, but the Unix man pages
are worth a look. They've been around since the 70s and set a minimum
standard:
all docs available online
all docs printable by user
extensive cross-referencing
complete; things like file formats are covered
known bugs, including limitations of the design, are documented
I find it shocking that some current products do not reach this standard.
The best explanation of the rationale for these is in the Kernighan and
Plauger books "Software Tools" ot "Software Tools in Pascal". Out of date
and likely out of print, but libraries should have them.
