We do have the American Medical Writers Association, ACM's SIGDOC, and the
IEEE's PCS, all of which have conferences. Perhaps the answer is specialized
groups (other than STC SIGs) for other fields/industries. 

I assume the STC sessions are so general because the TWs who attend
represent so many different fields. I know I'd love to see sessions
addressing the specific subjects I document daily, but I'd be better off at
an e-commerce conference for that. I'm going to STC for a number of reasons,
none of which is so I can learn about XML as a substitute for EDI...
