You should have been there when the emerging technologies SIG got started.
They have a list. The most emergent technology discusses was MS Word.
There are three professional organizations for TWs: STC, ACM, and IEEE. Once
you join STC, you can be an affiliate member in any of these organizations
even if they won't make you a full-fledged member. Then, you can attend
technical conferences beyond the documentation SIG conferences.
There is no reason why STC should be all things to all people. It won't
succeed if it tries.
STC conferences have always been light and introductory in there approach to
every topic not just technology. You can learn so new things, but they will
be few and far between. The problem with technology as a topic is just what
technology. Right now we are dominated by software TWs. Does that mean that
only software related technologies need to be presented? We have enough
lines on this list. Imagine what the content topology would look like if
content other than TW technology is presented. TW is a technology.
