TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Being the leading professional organization in a field and being a
governing, licensing organization for a field are two entirely different
things. Why do you feel like you need to have some organization's
permission to do your job?
The only documents that matter should be the ones we are producing, not the
ones that hang on our walls.

However, is there any organization out there MORE qualified to offer
certification? I realize that not everyone likes or recognizes the STC (as
is pretty evident by the posts to this list), but if not the STC, then who?
IEEE? ACM? I think not. Like it or not, I would contend that the STC is
the leading professional organization in the technical communication field,
and as such, is most qualified to pursue certification issues.
