I'll bet he wasn't using underlining at all. Highlight some text in Word- Kathryn Jacobs, BrainBench MVP MS PowerPoint
and click the Bottom Border button on the toolbar--the "underline" appears
below the descenders.
Voila.

He was using Times New Roman and Arial - no changes to those items.
That was my first thought as well. He claims he has not changed any
fonts, drivers, or other files. (But then isn't that the case anytime
someone reports a problem? :)
