Bonnie,
In our manuals, we have the chapter title in the header, and page number in
the footer. We use the same format: chapter 2, page 6 would read "2-6."
I agree with you - the chapter number is redundant. Readers are looking for
content, the chapter name, more often than the chapter number.

Subject: Footer redundancy (or "What am I missing?"

Our manuals now use the following format for page
numbers in footers: <chapter #>-<page #>
Our even-page footers contain the above format in the
left corner of the footer and the manual name in the
right corner of the footer.
Our odd-page footers contain information similar to that
of the following example in the left corner of the
footer: "CHAPTER 4. DEFINING SYSTEM SETTINGS"
The page number appears in the right corner of the odd-
page footer.
My manager sees no need to remove "CHAPTER 4." from the
odd-page footer, while I am certain that it should be
removed because the chapter number is already in the
page number.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Bonnie Granat
