Create a macro with the following as the code:

Public Sub MAIN()
On Error GoTo -1: On Error GoTo theend
WordBasic.ToolsMacro Name:="ToolsBulletsNumbers", Run:=1
theend:
End Sub

This lets you use numbering the way it was in earlier versions of Word. I
don't know if it will solve your problem, but I thought I'd run this up the
flagpole and see if it floats. ;-)
