Maybe tell them that the practice dates from the time that *all* documents were hand-written, and that a 4 in handwriting might be confused with a 9 or even a 7. For insurances, scribes had to write four (4). Redundancy made sense at this time.

The first type-writers continued this practice.

Sometimes I like to write four (7), just to make things interesting.

I have engineers who insist I write numbers like four (4).
To me this clutters the page and is harder to read.

How can I convince people that four is sufficient?
