One reason I LOVE using PDFs is the ability to search hundreds of documents
at for a single word or phrase. At my previous job, we had over 50,000 pages
of documentation made up of about 80 different PDF files. Because of the way
we created our PDFs, I was able to search for any word and find every
occurrence in all 50,000 pages. I think that makes life easier as a user
because you don't have to bother trying to figure out what manual your
subject is in--you do a search and Reader takes you right to it.
Plus, we used a lot of cross-document references. If you encounter a manual
cross-reference in hard copy manuals, you have to lug out a different 500
page manual and thumb through it to find addition info. If the manuals are
linked through PDFs, at worst you have to find the right bookmark to find
the info; at best, you can click a link that will take you to the exact
page.
