TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I find that my answer (somewhere between always and frequently) parallels the
way I approach a project that I plan to do from scratch. I research, if
necessary. I sketch. I list. I review. I go over things to see if any of it is
out of order or physically impossible. I analyze it to see if step one should be
"put the dogs outside and the cats in the basement."
In other words, I'm a very methodical person. I suppose I was destined to become
a tech writer. I've taken innumerable aptitude tests in hopes of discovering a
new and exciting career for which I'm ideally suited. Always comes up tech
writer. Of course, my next project could be *developing* a new and exciting
career for which I'm ideally suited...

If you can remain calm, you
just don't have all the facts.
