Yes. When I contracted briefly at iXL, the tech
writers there wrote specs. Having gone from tech
writer to project manager (and now back to tech writer
again), I was able to better specs than most engineers
or project managers. In fact, I set some new
standards, if I don't say so myself.
One thing I have noticed is that the definition of
functional spec varies from company to company - some
describe more technical aspects, while others describe
more user interface stuff. I have worked at places
where the engineers write the specs, where the
project/product managers write the specs, and where
tech writers do it. I think this is a valuable asset
for any tech writer to have. It wouldn't hurt to get
the experience. I don't see any real disadvantage to
doing it.
