Someone was kind enough to forward me the original post. I see that I was
not only off on how to answer the question, but I am apparently reading
every other word this morning, as this is a teacher asking about what to
teach, not a student asking about what to take.

I am teaching a introductory college course in technical writing and need
some suggestions of what to incorporate into the course work. What type of
technical writing skills are needed specifically in the workforce? What
technical areas do you see people you work with or supervise lack?

An introductory course should not focus on specific skills needed in the
workforce, nor on specific technical know-how. An introductory course should
focus on writing, audience analysis, and methods of seeking answers to
questions that may arise. I believe if you go to any college website where
tech writing is taught, you should be able to find plenty of course
descriptions, agendas, lists of reading materials, and course highlights
that will clarify exactly what should be taught at the introductory level.
