Jo Byrd, Susan Ahrenhold, and myself were all former librarians! Wow!
I appreciate Jo bringing this back to TechWr-L relevancy. Besides her and
Susan's excellent points, I think that this harks back to the discussion
about what courses could supplement a tech writing curriculum. If available,
many library science or information science courses would be very relevant
for technical writers. Folks teaching technical writing who have local
access to such courses should check out the curriculum.
Library science graduate courses (most librarians have a Masters degree,
just so folks know) are taught in graduate schools of library and
information science, usually at large state universities. Many states only
have one program for the whole state.
I agree with Jo, I don't regret my graduate degree in library science at
all. It was an excellent set of courses to take, and the skills I learned,
in addition to the interviewing skills I learned as a reference librarian,
have helped me tremendously as a tech writer.
