Microsoft has come up with something called a data island. It embeds XML in
HTML and lets HTML along with CSS handle the presentation. A new browser is
unnecessary.
The real value of XML for technical communicators is in creating content for
semantic nets, discussed in last months Scientific American and other
places. The underlying idea is that using XML you have the ability to merge
two documents to create a third. Nobody I know is doing this yet. But, it is
one of the benefits that will accrue when everyone's content is tagged.
