"... Anyone on this list who is documenting non-computer stuff (science,
industrial equipment, whatever)--how'd you get into that? What are the
qualifications? How did you find your job?"
I "fell" into my current job because several years ago while I was a
senior administrative assistant, I developed internal procedures for my
group. I had to train some new employees and none of the procedures had
ever been documented so I wrote them up. Other groups (doing the same
type of work) in outlying offices heard about the manual so copies were
provided to them. The VP of Corporate Administration created a new
corporate level job for me to document all company policies and
procedures. I spent many years doing that along with training many new
employees in both procedures and our internally developed software. We
had technical writers who wrote the software user guides; however, I am
the only one left so while my primary task is continuing to develop and
review procedure documents, training materials, and provide training, I
will get to revise a few software manuals next year. Although the
software had been in use for a few years, there are many changes that
will have to be included so this should be an interesting assignment.
