TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Your experience with a job market that is less than hot right now is probably
more a function of a national economy than you in particular. Tech writing,
especially in the computer industry, suffers from cyclic trends and we happen
to be in a down part of that cycle at the moment. Granted, this
recession-that-isn't-a-recession has hit the computer industry harder than most
other segments of the economy, but that's usually what happens in a down cycle
- only it's hit other industries hard before. I think this is about the worst
hit the computer industry has taken in the last 20 or so years.
And it's cyclic. The computer industry will recover, in whatever shifted form
demand requires. And those who work in the computer industry will either adapt
or leave. That's normal for just about any industry going through cyclic
adjustments. If you wait it out, you'll probably find opportunities again.
But don't get caught up in the "poor me" attitude. The economy isn't picking
on you in particular, any more than the weather singles out people to rain on.
Prospective employers tend not to want to make job offers to candidates who
walk around with a victim mentality.
