I started a new job in a newly created position, Technical
Communicator/Proofreader, about 2 months ago. My main function is to create
hard copy end user manuals and online help for our proprietary software
application. I inherited this project from one of the programmers. The
hard copy manual was created in Microsoft Word. It is more than 500 pages,
and needless to say, I am having a difficult time managing a document of
this size in Word. I chuckle nearly every time I read a posting specifying
a problem with Word. I've encountered nearly every one! Anyway, the hard
copy manual is in Word and the online help is in RoboHelp. This is my first
venture into creating online help and from my experience so far, RoboHelp
seems pretty easy to use. My question is this...my supervisor agrees with
me totally that we should scrap Word and look for another tool for producing
the hard copy manuals. Our communications department currently uses Ventura
and QuarkXpress for publishing large documents. In the past, I have used
Adobe PageMaker. I was told Ventura has a huge learning curve, so I am not
really considering that option right now. QuarkXpress seems very similar to
PageMaker. Are either of these programs compatible with RoboHelp? What are
your thoughts?
