When I was teaching English Composition at a major university, I learned that
the simplest thing any writer could do to improve the clarity and readability
of a document was to lose the pronouns. When I left that gig and got into
technical writing, I expanded that phrase to read "lose the pronouns and the
acronyms." Doing so does wonders for readability.

Of course, I have come to wonder if people really WANT their documents to be
clearer or more readable. That's particularly true of legal documents, but then
that's a whole different topic.
