interview or during a performance review? If so, what do you answer at an
initial interview? Do you stick with a professional goals (problem being
how would I know where I want to be if I don't know what the opportunities
are) or personal goals (retired lottery winner)?"
When I was a recruiter, that question was used to determine your character as
much as your goals. If you jokingly answered "retired lottery winner" the
follow-up question would have been "what would you do as a retired lottery
winner?" In other words, would you sit around the pool all day doing nothing,
or would you have lot's of intrinsic motivation and take up painting, work with
your favorite charity, or travel to places you've always wanted to visit?
People who like to stay busy find things to do, even with their "free" time.
People who do just enough to get by often do very little with their free time.
What the interviewer is looking for is a window into how motivated you are. Are
you a person who goes the extra mile, or someone who does the prescribed work
and not an ounce more?
So....you can start with your personal goal of retired lottery winner to break
the ice and then say "seriously, since the lottery is not a high statistical
probablility, I'd like to expand my experience in blah blah blah" and take it
from there.
