There's another alternative: people without goals can also be happy with
what they're doing, take pride in doing a good job, and have no desire
to do anything else.

It's rare, but it does happen. I've even interviewed at companies that
wanted people to answer, "Pretty much the same place as I am now,"
because they didn't want a turnover in employees.

Besides, the trouble with being goal-directed is that, if you're not
careful, you can find yourself promoted beyond your competence.
