Registered, or (R), is when the Registration Of Trademark certificate is
sent back. However, any slogan, logo or similar such identifying device can
be considered a Trade Mark, or TM, with certain inalienable rights - much
like copyright declares all works protected unless the author explicitly
declares otherwise.

If the TM is valuable enough to a company - is strongly associated with the
brand image - they usually register it to ensure they get it, and no-one
else can use it. This is not to say you HAVE to register your TM, just you
are a bit safer if you do.
