Yup. Check the archives for details, but basically you can't claim a
registered trademark (R) until you've actually registered it with the
relevant intellectual property office for your country; you can claim
something as a trademark (TM) as soon as you've applied for the
registration. Using either symbol with intent to deceive (e.g., using R when
you haven't even applied) can seriously damage your chances of being able to
use the trademark in future if the trademark office gets wind of this.
