I agree with you, in that they all seem synonymous. They might not have wanted "previous" because it simply refers to a day that is sometime before the day in question, but not necessarily the day *just* before it. The only problem is that neither "preceding" nor "prior" fix that, either.

The distinction may not be a big deal, but I thought I'd put out my feelers:

I'm writing a description of a report. When the application generates this
report, the report provides data based on work done the previous day (e.g.,
If run on Monday, the report will show data from Sunday.). It's been
recommended that I use "preceding" day to "previous" day, but no reason has
been given. I also began thinking about "prior" day.
