How about Perl? (www.perl.com)
Sure, real programmers might scoff at this scripting language listed
as a reply to a query about programming languages but if you
want a skill that'll be useful even if you never work as a Programmer,
Perl's your tool.
Things I do with Perl:
1. Converting source documents into a homegrown HTML help system.
2. Massive search-and-replace operations across an entire directory.
3. Link checking in an HTML help system. (finding broken links)
All that, and I've only been at this for a month!
