Since I answered "Other," I just wanted to note that for the most part, I
have had only simulated contact with actual users, through usability
testing.
It's not as good as watching actual users try to use the product and docs
(or interviewing them), but it's pretty darn close to the real thing -- if
you select your usability test subjects thoughtfully.
I've had a lot of experience conducting usability tests and find them
invaluable, and full of surprises.
