I feel compelled to point out the difficulty of depicting tortoises, hares,
cheetahs, and snails (well, maybe not snails) with a 16-color palette in a
16x16-pixel space. (Even with more colors and a 32x32 space it would be
difficult to make the icons readily recognizable, and then there's still
the issue of users who come from other cultures that have different fables.
They may see the hare and think "jump." Or they see the cheetah and think
"danger.")
IMO, toolbars were a good idea that has been stretched way past the point
of usefulness. It's become an informal rule that a GUI must have a toolbar
whether the controls really lend themselves to that format or not. Why not
embed controls in the interface that are more intuitive? Let's think
outside the 16-by-16-pixel box.
If these really must be toolbar buttons, I agree with Sean on using + and
-.
