RE: the dearth of documents on documenting APIs and SDKs
Subject:RE: the dearth of documents on documenting APIs and SDKs From:Monica Cellio <cellio -at- pobox -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 11 Jul 2001 14:09:12 -0400 (EDT)
I've toyed with this idea from time to time. For me, the barriers are:
- time
- the tens-of-dollars aspect
- lack of marketing skill
I've been doing API documentation for a while, and I think I'm pretty
good at it. I've given a couple of workshops at STC gatherings and
they've been well-received. But I've never been an independent
contractor and don't (currently) know squat about how to actually get a
book out there in the popular press. And right now, I'm feeling a little
too busy to climb that particular learning curve. (I've been trying to
carve the problem up into some article-sized pieces, and I think the time
is better spent writing those articles, even if they don't pay much or at
all.)
