Traditionally, academic and professional journals were places where
researchers published their findings or theories, hoping to get acceptance
or notoriety in their fields. The papers were published with no compensation
to the author, aside from holding up possible discoveries or new twists on
old information to a group of peers (there is an excellent biography in this
month's Analog magazine about the guy who first "discovered" black holes in
which trying to get his paper into a respected astronomical journal plays a
part).

Most academic and many professional journals continue this tradition, as
does the STC. Which is why many of those organizations also offer a
magazine with a broader, yet shallower focus. Some of them pay, others
don't.

So, my opinion is, if you want to get paid, submit to a publication that
pays. If you want fame and notoriety in your profession, submit to a
respected journal in your field and take what they give you. If you want
the world to be exactly the way you want it to be, then close yourself in a
box and paint the walls with crayons.

Or something.

Jason
