Tim Huckabee wrote about being asked to pen an article for Technical
Communication.

Just a note about publishing in peer-reviewed journals...In other fields (or
at least in the natural sciences), it is not uncommon to actually have to
pay to have work published. Because publishing is an integral part of
career-building in biology and land management, journals get away with
charging authors a certain amount per page once their articles are accepted.
I had about a 3-paged article published in the Wildlife Society Bulletin a
few years back, and I think it cost me around $250.00. It was worth it to me
at the time; I was a graduate student trying to build credibility among the
natural sciences crowd.

I had always assumed that TC contributors were academics whose careers
depended on publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Guess I was wrong.

Looking forward to your article, Tim!
