Nope - I always use mergeformat as well.
Do this test:
1) Link insert a 300x300 pixel picture into your document.
2) Save and close
3) Replace the picture file with another of the same name, but 100x300 in
size.
4) Open your word doc - the new picture is stretched out to fit the old
frame.
