Commercial publications tend to pay for articles, but often not until
they're published.

Academic/professional journals tend not to pay for articles, although the
author may receive additional copies (the STC does this). George Hayhoe, who
belongs to this list, can address this better than I.

Some professional societies (NOT the STC) do charge authors to publish their
papers. I depends on their philosophy as much as on their finances. I recall
discussions of this going back to the 70s. It's a dead issue. If you don't
want to pay, don't play in their sandbox.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is the fact that some companies pay a
small honorarium to authors whose primary job is not writing for publication
(usually that eliminates flak hacks and marketing folks, but not tech
writers).

Frankly, writers write to satisfy their own needs. If they were just writing
for the money, they'd be doing potboilers, not technical stuff.

My $0.02 (payable in copies)
Marguerite
