Thanks for bringing this up, Marguerite -- it reminded me that my old
company did something like this (or my division did, at least). There was a
set bonus schedule for certain academic and professional achievements:
earning a degree, publishing an article, presenting at a conference, etc.
The amounts weren't huge, but they did signify that the company valued these
accomplishments -- most of these activities weren't *required* for
professional advancement in that division.
