Subject:RE: ... what makes a resume stand out? From:Charlie Montgomery <Charlie -dot- Montgomery -at- onename -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Fri, 13 Jul 2001 11:09:41 -0700
Writing an Objective statement and placing it at the top of a resume is the
same mistake as leading with your education. The content of these are
assumed and waste precious space at the top.
Think of it this way: in this market especially, a prospective employer is
reviewing hundreds of resumes. The focus when scanning resumes is not the
same as writing one. That is, a manager tasked with filling a position is
thinking this as he(/she) reads each resume:
"How can this person solve my problem?"
Often times, if you don't present a compelling and immediate reason to look
further than the first third of the first page of your resume, many resume
scanners won't. My advice? Lead with a clear and well-thought-out list of
what you can do to solve this hiring manager's problem -- your skills, your
proficiency set, and your accomplishments. Whet their appetite, then move
into your experience section.
Also, many companies do not even look at a formatted resume while screening,
but ask you to submit a text-only version of your resume, which is then
entered into a searchable Jobs-type database. My advice in this case is to
load this baby with all the keywords in your skillset so that your name
comes up in the top list.
Good luck.
