Re: MS HTML Help Workshop or RoboHelp?
At my company, we are mulling over whether to use MS HTML Help Workshop or
RoboHelp as our primary online help-building tool. I've checked the archives
on this list, and there seems to be an eerie silence from tech-wrlers about
MS HTML Help Workshop as a help-building tool. Perhaps this is because there
are other lists about MS HTML Help?
Try the HATT list on Yahoo groups.
I've found Microsoft's web site information about MS HTML Help Workshop to
be confusing and badly organized, and it seems that it takes more time and
effort to create WebHelp with indexes, etc. using MS HTML Help than using
RoboHelp.
MS HTML Help is only useful for creating MS HTML Help, a Windows-specific HTML-based help format. It's primarily a tool for compressing groups of files into a single file (as well as providing some limited testing utilities). Other help-authoring tools (RoboHelp, ForeHelp, Doc2Help) use it behind the scenes to create CHM files. It has a very limited feature set. WebHelp is a proprietary HTML-based help solution from eHelp Corporation. The MS HTML Help workshop won't provide what you need to get WebHelp.
At this time, using RoboHelp, I create HTML Help and then WebHelp,
with the occasional JavaHelp project. We are on the brink of a major push
towards more online/web managed documentation, both in-house and for
customers, and are also looking towards online-based training modules. I
appreciate any feedback from users, and will post a summary reply to the
list, if tech-wrlers are interested.
If you're producing HTML-based help only, I'd either stick with RoboHelp or look at some of the other tools available for creating HTML-based online help (FAR, Deva and Dreamweaver). Each of those help-authoring tools provides features that can speed up development time.
