TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.

One way this information gets disseminated is through user group
conferences. For example, I use the DOORS requirements management system,
and I just got back from one of their user conferences. The documentation of
a large and complex system can't cover much more than its basic uses, so the
vendor (Telelogic) relies on users to share their experiences. An excellent
base of knowledge develops out of this; in fact, there are usually several
technical writers presenting at these conferences.
While it may seem like the users are doing the vendor's work for them,
attendees and presenters are rewarded for their troubles with all meals paid
for, cookies, brownies, and ice cream, and first-class evening
entertainment. Hey, that ain't workin'... I do recommend staying at a hotel
with a good fitness center when you go to something like this!
