As recently as Word 6.0 (okay, that's not so recent), utilities capable
of displaying everything in a .DOC file were available. Since the Word
file format of the time (and should it be any different today?) kept all
revisions as deltas at the end of the file, sharing Word documents may
compromise information that your company might just as soon keep
private.
Imagine taking an electronic copy of a proposal previously given to a
preferred customer, updating it, and sending it electronically to
another customer from whom you wish to garnish a higher profit margin.
No sweat unless the new customer happens to be able to glance at the
'guts' of the document and see what you quoted the other guy.
