To me a hyper link does not start another application, roll a movie, or some
other grandiose event.
A hyperlink moves you to another topic, or perhaps another document.
I suspect it is bad affordance to use a hyperlink to do more than move (or
take!) a user to another topic or the same style of document.
As a user myself *gasp!* I know I would be annoyed if when looking through a
document an innocent hyperlink - and to me that is a piece of text
highlighted and underlined in blue - fired up a new and painfully slow to
load movie or opened another application without giving me warning.
Segmented Hypergraphic - a wonderful easy off the tongue term from when I
used HDK (think Robohelp!) to say that a graphic was a link. For anything
more than a link to another topic in the document, or to another similar
document I would use one of these - not a hyperlink.
We need to both educate users and allow users to develop at their own level
and pace.
