Generic question:
Does higher education even get factored in once you've built a solid base of
experience? If so, how and why? I'm just curious. All I have is a BS (well,
that and very solid, diverse working experience. *g*), and so far haven't
been able to justify the "upgrade" to MS or PhD. I can see where having a
master's degree would help you get your first few jobs, and how a PhD could
potentially hurt your chances the first few jobs, but other than that,
doesn't experience weigh in much heavier than education?

My MA has been invaluable both in preparing me for the work, and getting me
in the door. Also, my current position has a salary differential factored in
that includes the advanced degree. Absolutely no regret in getting and
professional I am better off because of it. On the other hand, I'm not sure
how much a PhD would do from either perspective. My manager at my previous
job was very interested in my returning for a PhD (we had some educational
benefits that would have paid much of the expense), mainly because I think
he liked the idea of "doctor" on the staff (it was a consulting firm). I
finally convinced him that 1) no way in hell was I going to put myself
through that for anything related to tech writing, 2) it wouldn't really
help me do my job better anyway. On the other hand, I don't really think it
would necessarily hurt my career.
