I make much less than Bill Gates, and much more (I hope) than the kid who
mows lawns in my neighborhood.

That should be more than enough information for interviewers. ;)

I still maintain it's none of their business what you made in your last job
(or current job). Your pay rate should be based on your worth to THEM. If
they want a cold hard number and will not rest until you give them one,
reply with "I want X-thousand a year". Make it painfully obvious that it's
none of their business without saying so.

So far I have not had a problem with "I've been paid competitively for my
field in this geographic area."
