Which is a good reason to decline requests for your current salary, but *not* a good reason to lie about it. And yes, most people are going to consider it a lie. I realize Andrew doesn't, but other unless you're applying for a job in his shop, it really doesn't matter that he considers it a "grey area," does it? If someone is actually willing to toss your resume (or even fire you) for lying about your salary, I wouldn't count on them sharing Andrew's definition of a "range."

The "other factors" argument is almost as lame as the "total compensation"
argument. It just makes you look like you're grasping for straws. Talk
numbers and don't try to justify the situation. Nobody is going to
remember that you said you had a nice office and could telecommute. They
are going to remember that you said $32,000.
