I'd change the sentence a bit to make it more clear:
"The [dev system] is identical to a production...console, except (that) it
contains/includes/has (or does not contain/include/have - whatever the case
may be)an optical disc drive mechanism."
just a suggestion

Subject: Help! Comma usage question
Hey, techwhirlers--
I need quick punctuation help. I've been staring at a sentence for so long
that I have no idea what the correct punctuation is:
"The [dev system] is identical to a production...console with the exception
of the optical disc drive mechanism."
Should there or should there not be a comma after the word "console"? And
can someone refresh my memory as to the rule for this?
Thanks a MILLION!
