The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) recently issued a
report on the status of a number of job classifications, including Technical
Writing. There's a summary on the WinWriters site: http://www.winwriters.com/mixedbag.htm. According to the report, there is
still a deficiency of Technical Writers nationwide.
I recently "enjoyed a lot of extra free time" and found myself competiting
with a large number of laid-off employees and employees of companies that
were not-so-stable. (This was in the Seattle/Microsoft area.)
I'd try to swing something with your company.
Hope that helps,
--Craig
BTW, the recruiters I spoke with said that things would pick up last June.
