Bruce-please, don't weep for me. There are very few people in the world who
get paid to do the things that they most love. The rest of us do the best we
can. My job is an enabler. It's as clear and simple as that. My favorite
activity is playing disc golf. My generous salary as a technical writer has
allowed me to purchase my own practice equipment and travel to tournaments
all over the country. The flex time has allowed me to play disc golf nearly
every sunny afternoon.
I've had real jobs (read: manual labor under the hot sun) that I loved much
more than what I do now...but they didn't pay much. And I have had much
worse jobs, which also did not pay much. In tech writing I have found a very
happy medium: I completely enjoy what I do for a living. But I don't define
myself by it. There are a thousand other things I would rather be doing. But
there are bills to pay, and tournaments to attend.
Now that I think about it...I'm saddened to think that so many people define
themselves by what they do for a living.
