TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I graduated in May, and I began working for a non-profit medical society
as "publications coordinator" (I edit all of our publications, which
include a medical journal, member newsletter, and anything else that pops
up) in June. I was hired on a part-time basis, but during my interview
I was asked if I would be interested in going full-time eventually, if
they gave me additional responsibilities. Well, of course I would be.. I
won't get into why I took a part-time job in the first place.
Anyway, today one of the higher-ups asked to speak to me, and she asked me
again if I was interested in a full-time position. She said nothing was
definite yet as far as what my additional responsibilities would be, but
they would generally fall under the category of "communications." I am
almost positive that a big part of my new workload would consist of
dealings with membership (the woman who does all of that now is resigning,
and I have a feeling they are thinking of giving me her work instead of
hiring someone else).
The thing is, I have about zero desire to do that kind of work. I am an
editor.. that's what I love.. but I also want (and need) the full-time
position, so I am willing to do it. However, I definitely want to be
compensated for it. Not only would I be changing from part-time to
full-time status, but I would also be doing a job I would not normally
choose to do. My question is, what kind of salary increase do you think is
fair in this situation?
