TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I have a lone writer job similar to the one you describe. When I first
started, my boss refused to let me use the title "technical writer". He
hated the "technical" part, considered that my job would be much more than
just writing technical reports (which is how he defined the "technical
writer" role, apparently).
Here are some alternatives we considered:
corporate/company writer
business writer
You might also try:
content developer (or content writer)
communication specialist (which works if you have no military connections)
What did I settle on? After a week of agonizing indecision, I ended up as a
Writer. (or sometimes Writer/Editor)
Now that my boss is long gone (as well as much of the marketing content), I
happily call myself a technical writer.
